How many times have you listed our goals every New Year and clung on to the hope that this time you might see it through. That this year, things will be different and things you have been hoping for and keeping the faith for will actually happen.
How do you get out of this cycle? How do you set your year’s goals without wasting your time and effort?
Here are the 5 ways to set goals so you can have life you have always wanted.
1. Know what you REALLY want.
Sometimes the things that you really want are not tangible things. You may want to be promoted, make more money in the bank or lose 15 pounds but these are not the true “goals” in life. They are just means to achieve our real objective. Your true goals are often derived from the feelings that you get whenever you achieve the things mentioned above. Identify the emotions you want in life and it will direct you to your goals. Some of these are confidence, security, love and happiness.
2. Look back and learn from the past
Past mistakes, even past achievements and successes are good ways to find the best strategy in achieving your goals.
If you want confidence in your life, reflect and see what you were doing when you felt most confident. Who were you with? Can you do it again? Contemplate on things you’ve done in the past and take note of those situations that are aligned and relevant to your goal.
3. Come Up With Strategies To Get What You Want
List the things that you think can help you achieve the goals you have set for yourself.
For example, you have been yearning to feel more confident about yourself. Perhaps your lack of self-confidence stems from poor self-esteem. So what you should do is find activities that can boost your self-esteem. Enroll for a gym membership or dance lesson, take a communications or writing class, etc.
Whatever your goals may be, there are always more than one strategy available for you.
4. Implement Your Strategies
When you do, make sure that each one is Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Relevant and Time-Bound (SMART).
5. Review and Course Correct.
Whatever it is that you have set to do this year, it is always important to look back and evaluate what you have done. This way, you get to identify what is effective and should be continued among your strategies and those that need to be replaced with far helpful and realistic ones.
