Bai Fang Li peddled his pedicab everyday for almost twenty (20) years to save up for his donation. He donated a total of 350,000 yuan to help more than 300 poor students continue with their studies.
In 1987, 74 year-old Fang Li return to his hometown and was already ready to retire when a group of children working in the field caught his attention.
According to his daughter Bai Jing Feng “He asked why the children didn’t go to school. And our relatives told him that it was because they were too poor to afford tuition.”
Fang Li grew up illiterate and had always hoped that the next generation could change their destiny with education. So he decided to donate 5,000 to schools in their hometown. He also went back to work where he earned 20 to 30 yuan a day.
At the age of 82, Fang Li founded an education support fund with the help loans.
“He never forgot when to give money to the schools and often urged us to give his earnings to the school. Each time he gave the money he felt very happy and said he had completed his mission again.” Xu Xiuxiang said, one of the workers of Education Support Fund.
In 2001, nearly 90 year-old Fang Li donated his last installment of money to Tianjin YaoHua School. He then stopped working due to old age.
In 2005, he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. He passed away on September 23, 2005, in a hospital. Hundreds
