A Heartbreaking video of a father singing the Beatles’ classic Blackbird to his dying son went viral this month. In the video you will see, Chris Picco, a Christian church leader, sings to his baby named Lennon at the neonatal intensive care unit of Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital in California.
The video shows a heartbreaking yet beautiful last moment shared between father and son.
Chris Picco’s wife Ashley passed away in her sleep at the age of 30 after giving birth by caesarean section. Even though their baby Lennon survived, his lack of movement and brain activity was a concern for the doctors and nurses.
Knowing that Lennon will not make it for long, Chris asked permission to bring his guitar into the neonatal ICU so he could play music for his son. He played for several hours a day. According to him, Ashley would often feel Lennon moving to music during her pregnancy.
After four days, Lennon passed away.
Even though Chris lost two love ones in a row, his faith has taught him to turn tragic situation into an experience more closely aligned with God and God-realized love. On a memorial page he posted a statement stating how blessed and honored he was to have Lennon and Ashley.
“Dear friends, family, and supporters; it is with an unbelievably heavy heart that I write this. My little fighter, Lennon James Picco, went to sleep in his daddy’s arms late last night.
He was surrounded by family, friends, and the best doctors, nurses and hospital staff in the world. He was dressed in an outfit that Ashley bought for him, with little guitars on it, and wrapped in a blanket made by a dear friend.
I have been so blessed and honored to love him before he was formed, to cherish him while mommy carried him, meet him face to precious face, and hold his perfect little body while we said ‘goodbye for now’.
“There are no words, but I wanted to keep you updated, as your love and support has meant more than anything in the world. All you need is love.” He wrote.
On Saturday, Nov. 15, a memorial service for Ashley and Lennon was held at the Loma Linda Seventh Day Adventist Church in California.
May their souls rest in peace.
